Athletic Bilbao Vs Barcelona

Prediction : Under 2.5 Goals

The big news for Barca is that Lionel Messi is missing with the calf injury that kept him out of the sides north American tour earlier this month. The visitors forward line, therefore, is likely to be made up of Griezmann, Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele.

The reigning LaLiga champions are unbeaten in their last 10 MD1 fixtures of the next season (W8 D2). The last defeat by a reigning champion in their first league game of the following campaign was Real Madrid in 2008/09 (2-1 vs Deportivo at Riazor).

Athletic Club are winless in their last 11 LaLiga matches against Barcelona (D2 L9), failing to score in eight of those games.

No away side has won more LaLiga games against Athletic at the new San Mames than Barcelona (W4 D1 L1 – level with Atletico de Madrid – W4 D1 L1). Only the Red-And-Whites (11) have scored more away goals there than the Blaugranas (nine).

This will be the 10th encounter between Athletic Club and Barcelona on MD1 in LaLiga, with the Catalonian side winning six and drawing two. Athletics only win in such a fixture came back in 1949 (3-1).

Barcelona have won their opening LaLiga match in each of the last 10 seasons, but only two were away from home. The last time the Catalonian side failed to win on MD1 was in 2008 against Numancia (1-0).

After losing their final game of the 2018/19 LaLiga season against Sevilla (0-2), Athletic could lose back-to-back games in the competition for the first time since Gaizka Garitanos arrival in December 2018.

Barcelonas Luis Suarez has scored seven goals in 13 games against Athletic in all competitions but only two of those have been scored at San Mames, with the most recent coming in August 2015 (also on MD1).

Iñaki Williams could score his 50th goal for Athletic Club (currently 49 goals in 204 appearances in all competitions). The striker has scored three goals in his 12 competitive games against Barcelona, most recently scoring against them in January 2017, in the Copa del Rey.
Barcelonas Antoine Griezmann has scored eight goals in 18 LaLiga games against Athletic Club – against no side has he scored more in the competition (also eight vs Celta de Vigo, Valladolid and Valencia).

Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde has lost four of his six LaLiga away games against Athletic, however he is unbeaten in his previous two such games (W1 D1).
